Peshawar airport plan

The provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is considering the establishment of a new international airport in Peshawar. Officials also plan to relocate the existing Bacha Khan International Airport to a safer area. The move aims to reduce risks associated with the airport’s current location in a densely populated zone. Initial planning and surveys will be submitted to the government soon. The decision comes as part of efforts to improve urban safety and regional development.

An important meeting was held on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Commissioner Peshawar Division Riaz Khan Mehsud. Officials discussed preliminary homework for establishing a new airport and relocating the current facility. They reviewed traffic, security, and population challenges in the city caused by the existing airport. Participants emphasized that relocating the airport is necessary under current circumstances. The meeting also highlighted the importance of selecting a safe and suitable location.

The project requires about 2,500 acres of land for the new airport. Several possible locations were discussed, including Mathani, Azakhel, Surizai, Mamo Khatki, Naaguman, and Bara Akakhel. After detailed surveys, the most suitable location will be recommended to Chief Minister Sohail Afridi and Chief Secretary Syed Shahab Ali Shah. Officials aim to ensure the airport serves long-term needs and safety standards. The selection process will prioritize accessibility and urban planning considerations.

Commissioner Mehsud directed the Deputy Commissioner Peshawar to form a committee to identify the best location. The committee will be led by the Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) and include Revenue Department officials and Pakistan Airports Authority experts. They will conduct a detailed survey and prepare initial recommendations. The committee’s work will guide the provincial government in finalizing the airport relocation plan. The next review meeting is scheduled in three weeks.

Officials described the project as critical for regional development and urban facilities. They stressed coordination among departments to achieve meaningful progress. Security, urban planning, and future growth were highlighted as key factors in decision-making. Authorities said careful planning will enhance Peshawar’s infrastructure and international connectivity. The initiative is expected to bring long-term benefits for the city and surrounding areas.
